An OB-GYN Debunks the Most Common Breast Cancer Misconceptions

When it comes to breast cancer, what we often hear from family, friends, or even online sources can sometimes be confusing. In reality, breast cancer is a complex disease influenced by many factors, and relying on inaccurate information can delay important decisions like getting screened or consulting a doctor.

To help set the record straight, we sat down with Dr. Vianca Villarica, an OB-GYN at Doctor Anywhere, who shared her expert insights on the most common myths.

Myth 1 - Only older women get breast cancer

“That’s definitely a no,” Dr. Vianca said. “Although it is very common in older women, middle-aged women, breast cancer can happen at any age, at any time.”

While the risk of breast cancer increases with age, young women are not immune. In fact, studies have shown that breast cancer in younger women can sometimes be more aggressive. This is why regular breast self-examinations and check-ups are important, regardless of age.

Myth 2 - Wearing a bra, using deodorant, or breastfeeding increases breast cancer risk

Person in a towel applies deodorant to underarm in a bathroom. Reflection visible in mirror. Focus on grooming, clean setting.

Dr. Vianca was clear: “That’s definitely another myth. Because there are no credible studies or research that would link the use of deodorant or bras, or even the underwired bras, with breast cancer. However, there are some theories that actually say that breastfeeding actually lowers the chances of developing breast cancer.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, no scientific evidence connects bras or deodorants to breast cancer risk. In fact, breastfeeding is believed to provide protective benefits for mothers.

Myth 3 - Breast cancer is only inherited from your mother

Two women in a cozy room, one in pink shirt giving the other in blue a shoulder massage. Bright brick wall, bookshelves, and large windows.

“Only about 5% of breast cancer is actually from an inherited gene,” Dr. Vianca explained. “But it can be passed down from your mother or even your father. There are also other bigger factors that can influence the development of breast cancer and not just the inherited genes.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms that while family history and inherited gene mutations (such as BRCA1 or BRCA2) can increase risk, lifestyle and environmental factors also play a major role. This means that maintaining a healthy lifestyle, going for regular screenings, and being aware of any changes in your body are crucial preventive steps.

Misinformation can cause unnecessary fear, or worse, prevent women from getting screened early. As Dr. Vianca emphasized, breast cancer awareness is not only about understanding the risks but also about separating fact from fiction.

The Department of Health (DOH) encourages women to perform monthly breast self-exams and schedule regular check-ups, especially if they have a family history of breast cancer. Early detection remains the best way to improve chances of recovery.
