Popular Summer Health Myths You’ve Probably Heard

a woman enjoying the summer vacation

When summer hits the Philippines, we all feel it! The intense heat, the humidity, and the urge to cool down however we can. But along with the season come long-held beliefs and health practices that may not always be factual.

From avoiding cold drinks to skipping sunscreen, many summer habits are passed down through generations. While well-meaning, some of these might do more harm than good. So let’s bust a few common summer health myths that Filipinos still believe!

Myth 1: “Drinking ice-cold water after being under the sun will make you sick.”

Many Filipinos believe that drinking cold water after sun exposure causes “pasma,” which is said to cause muscle cramps, shaky hands, or even sudden fever.

According to medical experts, there’s no scientific evidence that supports the concept of "pasma." The Department of Health (DOH) and other health professionals confirm this is more of a cultural belief than a medical fact. However, drinking very cold water too quickly may cause throat discomfort or a brief “brain freeze.” Instead, hydrate by sipping cool (not ice-cold) water gradually.

Myth 2: “You don’t need sunscreen if you have morena or mestiza skin.”

Some people think those with darker or naturally tan skin don’t need sunscreen since melanin protects against the sun.

While melanin provides some natural UV protection, it doesn’t make you immune to sunburn, skin aging, or skin cancer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15, no matter your skin tone.

Myth 3: “Bungang araw (heat rash) happens only to kids.”

Many assume that heat rash or “bungang araw” only affects children.

Adults can also get heat rash, especially in hot, humid environments. Wearing tight or synthetic clothing, sweating excessively, or not showering after sweating can clog sweat glands and trigger those red, itchy bumps. Mayo Clinic suggests wearing breathable, cotton clothing and keeping your skin cool and dry to avoid heat rash.

Whether you're headed to the beach or just trying to survive the city heat, it's important to separate facts from fiction when it comes to summer health habits.
