5 Common Childhood Illnesses Every Parent Should Watch Out For

November is National Children’s Month, a time to celebrate the rights, well-being, and health of every Filipino child. It’s also the perfect reminder for parents to stay informed about the most common illnesses affecting children today.

To help us understand these conditions better, Doctor Anywhere General Practitioner Dr. Everly Miclat shares insights on the top five childhood illnesses that Filipino parents should watch out for, and how to keep kids healthy and protected.

1. Pneumonia

Pneumonia is an infection that affects the lungs, specifically, the main functional tissue called the parenchyma. It can be caused by either bacteria or viruses, though viral pneumonia is more common among children, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

“Watch out for fever, cough, and fast or shallow breathing (hingal),” explains Dr. Everly. “These are the three most common signs.”

Children under two years old, those who are malnourished, or those exposed to cigarette smoke are at higher risk. Incomplete vaccinations and lack of exclusive breastfeeding also increase susceptibility.

✓ Prevention tip: Keep up with your child’s immunizations (like the DPT and pneumococcal vaccines) and avoid exposing them to secondhand smoke.

2. Dengue Fever

A familiar threat in the Philippines, dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection often called “breakbone fever” because of the severe joint and muscle pain it causes.

“Look for fever, skin rashes that appear during or after the fever, and body aches,” Dr. Everly explains.

Dengue warning signs include persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, bleeding gums or nose, and unusual sleepiness or fatigue. If these occur, seek medical help immediately.

✓ Prevention tip: Keep your surroundings clean and mosquito-free. Make sure your child wears protective clothing and use mosquito repellents approved for children.

3. Diarrhea

Diarrhea, or acute gastroenteritis, is one of the most frequent childhood illnesses. It can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, often linked to contaminated food or water.

“Parents know their child’s normal bowel habits,” says Dr. Everly. “If your child suddenly has frequent, watery stools and stomach pain, that’s a red flag.”

The greatest danger from diarrhea is dehydration. Warning signs include dry mouth, sunken eyes, lack of tears, and reduced urination.

✓ Prevention tip: Encourage frequent handwashing and ensure safe food and water at all times. For mild cases, oral rehydration solutions (ORS) can help.

4. Measles (Tigdas)

Measles remains one of the most contagious viral illnesses among children. It spreads through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

“Don’t take measles lightly,” Dr. Everly warns. “It can lead to serious complications and even death.”

Look out for high fever, cough, runny nose, and red watery eyes, followed by a rash that starts on the face and spreads downward. Small white spots inside the mouth, called Koplik spots, are a telltale sign.

✓ Prevention tip: Vaccination is the best protection. Make sure your child receives the measles vaccine on schedule.

5. Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD)

HFMD is a viral infection that causes painful sores in the mouth and rashes on the hands and feet.

“It spreads easily through close contact and contaminated objects,” Dr. Everly explains. “Good handwashing is key to prevention.”

Most cases resolve within 7 to 10 days, but persistent fever, dehydration, or lethargy warrant medical attention.

Building Stronger, Healthier Kids

Beyond medicine, Dr. Everly emphasizes that prevention starts at home. “A simple healthy routine focuses on four key areas: nutritious meals, daily physical activity, enough sleep, and limited screen time,” she says. “And of course, regular immunizations and check-ups are essential.”

Regular check-ups help detect growth or developmental issues early, while vaccines protect against diseases that still circulate in many communities.
